Technology Can Help When Hiring a Newcomer to Hospitality

It's no secret. The American hospitality industry faces a labor shortage. Factors contributing to this shortage include the industry's recent growth and continued solid occupancies; competition for talent with comparable service industries like restaurants and retail; and, possibly, constrained legal immigration, which reduces the pool of potential entry-level workers.
The industry formally responded earlier this year, in January 2019, when the American Hotel & Lodging Association launched its "Hospitality is Working " campaign to help with recruiting and training of new workers in six key markets where the labor market is tight.
Most hoteliers would like to hire staff members that already have some experience in hospitality, everything from understanding the basic operating principles of a hotel and caring for guests to specific skill sets like working at the front desk, serving in a dining area or doing housekeeping. However, the reality is that many of the available and otherwise qualified job candidates will be newcomers to the hospitality industry.
This is this especially so in an industry where many job applicants are individuals referred to a given property by existing workers through word of mouth, a great supplement to more traditional job-casting strategies. The friends and family job network.
An example is housekeeping, where many hoteliers are familiar with high turnover at a position that may constitute the largest job category at any given property. Like many other jobs in our service economy, what may seem at first blush to be a relatively easy task, is anything but so. As a result, this situation has its challenges, but, also, some potential benefits. Clearly, there may be may be extra work for hospitality organizations in the hiring process, training and early days on the job. However, today's technologies can help in these areas, bringing workers up to speed more quickly. Also, newcomers may be attractive in the sense that they haven't learned any "bad habits" that may need to be corrected.
While the discussion applies to the broader management and operations of any hotel property, this article will highlight, in particular, the potential advantages of today's best technologies when hiring the newcomer to hospitality.
