Images (on Pinterest) are Worth a Thousand Words

In the past, hotels have used glossy brochures and images on the OTAs and/or the direct website to sell their property to potential guests. Now there's TripAdvisor, which allows both the property itself and past guests to upload pictures of the property. But hotels need to use all of the available channels to share their images with potential guests; after all, we all know the phrase "A picture is worth a thousand words". In recent years, Pinterest has taken off as a fantastic channel for hotels to share images, in order to entice potential guests to book a stay at their property.
How Does it Work?
Pinterest is a social media tool people use to "pin" photos to "boards", which allow hotels to share images of their property, their inspirations and favorite images. There are two different types of accounts: personal and business, which have different restrictions, guidelines for use and features. As a hotel, you will need to select the business option in order to get the most out of your Pinterest account. To sign up for a Pinterest business account, visit http://business.pinterest.com.
Typically, Pinterest users organize their images according to the various topics that interest the user – i.e. travel, hotels, beauty, wedding, etc. Photos can be uploaded directly to the site or via the "Pin It" button (which can be downloaded to your Bookmarks Bar for free on the website) and it will add the image to one of your boards.
Everyone using Pinterest can see the images that others pin; users can also opt to "follow" specific people to see the images that they have pinned when you sign on. People can "add" you and subscribe to see your pins and boards as well. Every time you "pin" a photo, it shows up in a newsfeed that can be seen by everyone. They can "like" the pin, "repin" the pin by adding it to one of their own boards or "comment" on the pin.
For hotels, Pinterest is a fantastic visual branding and marketing tool. Hotels can share images of their property, amenities, views, etc. and then others will be able to "repin", "like" or "comment" on them. The more your pins get repinned, the more people will see them and the more people who will view your boards.
