The word SPA actually comes from the acronym Sanus Per Aquam which means "health from water" in Latin. This is a fitting term still for the spa industry but not for the reasons that one would think. While water is still a strong component in the spa industry, it is no longer the main component. Instead, the term 'water' for spa in this day stands for the fluidity of the field itself.
Like water, the "shape of spa" is constantly changing, or flowing. The flow is getting stronger as knowledge of the benefits of the spa world grows in the eyes of the consumer. Spas are becoming more accepted and respected in the eyes of the consumer as they get more educated in the values of wellness especially towards the world of preventative medicine. This is causing the spa industry to grow at a rapidly increasing rate. Consumers expect spas as a part of their escapes or even a part of their goals for improvement.
In expecting spas though, they also know what to expect from the spas that they choose to visit. Consumers are becoming more educated on the capabilities of spas or spa lines. As in all growing industries, the challenge is to separate from the competition. That is when they choose which spa becomes a necessity instead of just a luxury in the eyes of the consumer because they feel they could not get the same benefits from anywhere else. The question arises about what spas can do to separate themselves from their competitors. What are consumers looking for?
Just like the spa world is a holistic industry, trends can be factored into the same. Current trends can be broken down into four factors. They are facilities, experience, services, and results. Especially for those wishing to make their spas a part of their revenues or profit, since spas surely add to the profit of a hotel, all of these factors should be considered. For that reason, this article will focus on those factors as a guide towards a successful spa.
